  • Taiwan braces for rainy start to Lunar New Year celebrations

Taiwan is expected to experience gloomy and rainy weather from the eve of the Lunar New Year on Thursday to New Year’s Day on Friday, according to meteorologist Peng Chi-ming. The weather is expected to improve from February 10 to February 12. Windward areas, including Taoyuan, Greater Taipei, Keelung’s North Coast, eastern parts of Yilan and Hualien, and the Hengchun Peninsula, are likely to receive rainfall due to the impact of the northeast monsoon. The central and southern mountainous areas may witness sporadic showers with more cloud coverage in the plains. The southwestern monsoon will intensify rainfall north of Taichung and in Yilan from Tuesday night until Wednesday, with the northern and northeastern mountainous areas receiving the most rain. The entire island will experience showers and heavy rain, especially in the central and northern regions, Yilan, and Hualien, between the eve of the Lunar New Year and New Year’s Day. Rainfall will gradually decrease from the evening of February 8, but showers may potentially occur throughout the day on February 9. However, the eastern half will still see an increased amount of clouds with occasional showers. Weather conditions are expected to enhance further from the second to the third day of the Lunar New Year, potentially resulting in clear skies in the western half and partly cloudy to clear skies in the eastern half. The southern and eastern regions of Hualien and Taitung will have lows of 12 to 14 degrees, with temperatures slowly warming thereafter.

  • Cold front in Taiwan linked to fatal cardiac arrests

A cold front in Taiwan has been linked to five fatal cases of Out of Hospital Cardiac Arrest (OHCA) in the Keelung region. Victims’ ages ranged from 52 to 97. The Keelung City Fire Department reported a total of five emergency rescue cases of OHCA, with two males and three females affected. It is unclear whether the cold weather was the cause of these emergencies. Temperatures dropped to 6-8 degrees Celsius on Tuesday morning, prompting the fire department to urge the public to prioritize warmth and guard against the risks posed by the low temperatures. The Central Weather Administration (CWA) reported temperatures of 6-8 degrees in areas north of central Taiwan and Yilan, and 9-12 degrees in southern Taiwan and Hualien-Taitung regions. The whole island may experience regional short-term rain due to moisture from southern China, with heavier rainfall expected in Keelung, the northern coast, and the mountainous area of Taipei city. New Taipei, Taipei, and Yi-lan may also be affected by heavy rains.

  • Taiwan issues heavy rain advisory for northern cities

The Central Weather Administration (CWA) has issued a heavy rain advisory for Taipei City, New Taipei City, and Keelung City in Taiwan, warning of potential intensive downpours throughout the evening. The northeast monsoon is causing localized heavy rainfall in coastal areas of Keelung and mountainous regions of Taipei. The strengthening of the northeast monsoon has also prompted alerts for strong gusts ranging from force 9 to 11, potentially affecting areas from Taoyuan City to Tainan City, as well as southeastern parts of the island, including Orchid Island, Green Island, and the Hengchun Peninsula. The advisory for strong winds covers an expansive area, including Taoyuan City, Hsinchu City, Hsinchu County, Miaoli County, Taichung City, Changhua County, Yunlin County, Chiayi County, Tainan City, the Hengchun Peninsula, Taitung County, Orchid Island, Green Island, Penghu County, and the Kinmen and Matsu region. • New Taipei’s Elephant Trunk Rock loses its ’trunk’

The iconic Elephant Trunk Rock in New Taipei City’s tourist spot lost its "trunk" due to heavy rain and winds. The damage was caused by severe weather, although further investigations are needed for a precise determination. The damaged landmark quickly gained attention online. The rock, located near Shenao fishing harbor, remains a concern as rainfall persists and rough seas continue, making it challenging for maritime patrol officers to assess the situation. Natural erosion or the impact of strong waves may have contributed to the breakage. Human activities such as tourists climbing on the rock and fishers driving iron chains into it have also caused noticeable damage over time.

  • Northeast monsoon brings rain to Keelung, Greater Taipei

The Central Weather Administration has issued a heavy rain advisory for Keelung City and New Taipei City due to the influence of the northeast monsoon. However, rain chances are expected to decrease as the day progresses. Meanwhile, conditions south of Hsinchu will remain mostly cloudy to sunny. Temperature variations are significant, with morning and evening lows ranging from 16 to 19 degrees Celsius, and daytime highs anticipated to reach 21 to 24 degrees in the north and Yilan, and 26 to 28 degrees in other areas. Starting Monday, a drier northeast monsoon will bring cooler air, resulting in clearer skies in the western part of the country and a halt in brief rain in the east. Stable and sunny conditions are predicted across the region, but residents should be mindful of the substantial temperature differences between day and night, with low temperatures potentially falling to around 12 degrees across the plains of Taiwan and lows near 16 degrees in Taipei.

  • Taiwan braces for northeast monsoon; heavy rain forecasted

  • Taiwan expects stable weather with isolated heavy rains

The Central Weather Administration (CWA) predicts stable weather conditions across Taiwan, with mostly cloudy to clear skies for the first half of Friday (Nov.10). However, a weather front is expected to pass through in the afternoon, bringing isolated heavy rain to the north coast of Keelung and mountainous areas of northern Taiwan. Meteorologist Wu Te-jung estimates that the island will experience sharp temperature drops due to the arrival of its first wave of continental air mass starting next Monday, with the country’s plain areas forecasted to drop below 15 degrees Celsius at their lowest. In the morning hours of Wednesday and Thursday, as northeast winds weaken, there will be a slight improvement in weather and a brief rise in temperature. However, the east of Taiwan can expect brief showers during this time. With continental highs hanging over the island, most regions across Taiwan are forecasted to remain relatively stable next Friday. Wu also foresees slight chills brought on by the effects of Taiwan’s first projected wave of cold air mass, offsetting daytime warmth, as "radiative cooling" (RC) causes bodies to lose heat at night.

  • Taiwan records lowest temperature after Lidong at 18.3°C

Taiwan experienced its lowest temperature of the winter season with a high of 18.3 degrees Celsius reported at Hualien Liyu Lake, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA). The island-wide temperature ranged between 22 to 24 degrees Celsius. Despite the weakening of the northeast monsoon, it was forecasted to be cloudy to clear over Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu regions. Isolated showers were expected in the southeast and the Hengchun Peninsula, with a chance of showers in other mountainous areas during the afternoon. Afternoon temperatures were predicted to warm up to 30 degrees Celsius nationwide. A stalled front from Zhejiang, China, and extending west to Sichuan, China, is approaching Taiwan, potentially bringing cooler weather to the northern and northeastern regions. Local sporadic showers are expected in Kinmen Matsu regions, with the possibility of local heavy rain estimated for the Keelung North Coast and northeastern mountain regions. Along with Penghu, central and southern regions of Taiwan are expected to continue to experience mostly cloudy to clear weather, with the possibility of afternoon showers in the mountains.
